Noel Whelan has slaughtered the performance of Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi during the Gunners’ stunning League Cup defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.
The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, tore into what he saw from the German international after he conceded an own goal on the way to a 5-5 draw at Anfield.
Gabriel Martinelli and Divock Origi both managed to grab a brace of goals for their respective sides but it was Reds youngster Curtis Jones who grabbed the winner, netting the all-important penalty after Dani Ceballos had seen his spot-kick saved in the shootout.
Whelan was left tearing Mustafi’s performance to pieces,
Whelan told Football Insider: “You take your chances when they come and he was shambolic. They’ve got many players there who have never filled the shoes of your Boulds, your Keowns, your Adams.
“They’re looking in the wrong areas. They need to get some horrible defenders there that just like to defend. They’ve got too many players there who want to be midfielders at the back. That’s not their job.
“Get that right and they’ll be a real force again. They’ve got the attacking presence, they’ve got the creativity going forward in the midfield areas but they’re going to concede like they did. It was just an absolute collapse.”
Mustafi’s only appearances for Arsenal this season have come in cup competitions, the 20-cap international failing to appear in a single Premier League matchday squad for Unai Emery.
The 27-year-old has played a total of 120 times for the Gunners since his move to north London, falling behind the likes of David Luiz in the pecking order.
