Club legend Sir Trevor Brooking believes Pablo Zabaleta would be the ‘perfect’ signing for West Ham.
West Ham have been strongly linked with a move for the 32-year-old defender this summer, after it was revealed that the Manchester City veteran will quit the club at the end of the season.
West Ham boss Slaven Bilic is desperate to add another experienced defender to his ranks this summer after a miserable season in the Premier League, and Brooking believes Zabaleta is the ‘perfect’ choice.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “If you link him to West Ham, which seems to be the case at present, he’d be absolutely perfect.
“He can play a few different roles, but more than anything, the West Ham team have lacked leaders. Zabaleta would be perfect for this group of players at the club.
“Whoever he ends up with, he’s going to be a plus. I’d be delighted [if he joined West Ham].”
The Argentina international has already played his final home game for Man City, helping the club to comfortable 3-1 win over West Brom on Tuesday night.
He arrived at the Etihad from Espanyol in 2008, and is currently the third longest-serving player at the club behind Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany.
He has made 333 appearances in all competitions, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
Sam Byram is the current first-choice right-back at the London Stadium, but his injury struggles and inconsistencies over the course of the season has seen Bilic try a number of makeshift options.
Midfielders Michail Antonio, Cheikhou Kouyate and Havard Nordtveit have each filled in as full-backs, but the signing of Zabaleta will signal the end of the failed experiment.
