Sky Sports: Approach made for centre-forward on Leeds radar, club makes transfer decision
Cardiff have approached Derby with an enquiry about striker Chris Martin, according to a report.
Sky Sports claimed in their live transfer blog on Monday [04:00pm] that Leeds United also have Martin, 29, on their radar and are interested in a potential loan deal to sign the Scotland international.
It is understood that Derby decided that they will prove tough to deal with in letting Martin leave Pride Park in order to join a promotion rival after Cardiff’s transfer enquiry was made.
However that could fall into Leeds’ hands as they are not a direct rival to the East Midlands club in the race for promotion to the Premier League this season.
Martin has been a regular for Derby this season but has not started a Championship game in over a month.
The former Norwich centre-forward has only scored one goal in 25 appearances, so it is no surprise that Gary Rowett had axed him from him starting line-up.
Football Insider verdict
It seems that Leeds would have to move quick to sign Martin because Derby may eventually cave in and let the target man join Cardiff on loan. The next few days is a window for the Whites to make a move for the Scotland international while the Rams are still trying to hold off interest from one of their closest rivals. If Derby hold out for a team lower down the table to make a move, or potentially a club away from England, then they may be let down. Martin is experienced at the top end of the Championship and will likely want to join a promotion-chasing side. Leeds are not a threat to Derby but are in the hunt for the play-offs, so it seems a perfect match.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are in the running to re-sign this Premier League forward as a £1.5million bid is readied by a high-flying club.
