Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes that Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani was harsh to have apologised for hiring Thomas Christiansen in the summer.
Christiansen was sacked by Leeds earlier this month and replaced by Paul Heckingbottom after a horrific run of form in the Championship that left the Yorkshire club cast well adrift of the play-off places.
Radrizzani was quoted by BBC Sport as saying he made a “mistake” in hiring Christiansen after Garry Monk quit Elland Road last year and that he wanted to “apologise” over the poor results that led to his decision to axe the Dane.
Former Leeds midfielder Prutton believes that apologetic remark was a brutal move by the Italian businessman, but he has suggested it also shows that the Elland Road chief is willing to take responsibility for his actions.
“When you look at the size of the squads and the financial capacity of the squads farther up in the top six then Leeds have been outspent, not only on the people that they are bringing in but also when you are talking about the relative wages of the players available. Maybe that is food for thought going forward and the fact that Andrea Radrizzani came out and almost apologised for appointing Thomas Christiansen means that he is taking some responsibility,” he said on the Yorkshire Evening Post website.
“On one hand, I thought that was a bit of a below-the-belt hit but on the other side of it you have got to admire someone that has taken it on the chin and said ‘look, it’s my fault, we should never have done that’.”
Heckingbottom is now gearing up for his first home game in charge of Leeds on Sunday when Bristol City travel to Elland Road.
The Whites have been in dire form and have not won a single game since Boxing Day.
The Robins are equally out of shape though, with just one victory in their last 10 fixtures across all competitions.
United do have selection issues going into the fixture with Samuel Saiz, Liam Cooper, Gaetano Berardi, Luke Ayling and Tyler Roberts among those ruled out with suspension and injury issues.
In other Leeds United news, this centre-forward has wrapped up his switch to a top-flight club after agreeing to leave Elland Road.
