Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has said that Leeds must make a statement of intent this summer after a hugely disappointing season.
Writing in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Prutton said that not many players at Leeds could feel 100% secure after such a disappointing campaign, and said that one player the club must target is 6ft 4 centre-back Kyle Bartley – recently relegated with Swansea.
“Leeds have had a poor season and because of that, heads will roll. Changes have to be made and you know that they will. Given how few players impressed over the course of this season, I doubt there are many in the camp who feel 100 per cent secure.
“You can’t gut a squad from top to bottom but I would expect the team to look very different when August comes.
“Someone like Kyle Bartley would be a very good start. It shows that the club have the money and the draw to sign a player who other good Championship clubs would like.
“That’s the level Leeds should be working at and not just for one or two deals. Repair the spine of the team and then go from there.”
Football Insider verdict:
Prutton has named the player most Leeds fans would like as their number one target this summer – especially as Matthew Pennington has just signed a new contract with Everton. That means a new centre-back is a must and Bartley and Pontus Jansson could rekindle their fantastic partnership at the back to give Leeds a solid new spine next season. However, Swansea getting relegated could have put a hurdle in the way, after it was said that Swansea would deal if they stayed up. That’s not to say the deal is dead in the water and Victor Orta should make it a priority. After that it’s goals. Leeds do have Tyler Roberts and Yosuke Ideguchi to test out but it’s unlikely that either of them will be the 20+ goal scorer they need if they’re going to mount a serious challenge to the top six. It’s going to be a very interesting season at Elland Road.
