Alan Hutton has claimed Dean Smith will not be pleased if Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn starts for Scotland against Israel on Wednesday.
The former Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes his fellow countryman will be “over the moon” to be back playing regularly but that his old manager will be fretting over his fitness.
McGinn played 82 minutes in the European qualifying play-off win over Serbia, as well as the full 90 against Slovakia on Sunday.
With Wednesday’s clash against Israel a chance for Scotland to finish top of their Nations League group and secure promotion, Hutton has suggested Steve Clarke will give McGinn another start, much to the displeasure of Smith.
Hutton told Football Insider: “He’s just like the Energizer Bunny, isn’t he? He just keeps going and going. He just goes through the roof with just everything that he does, he just gives you everything, always.
“He’s missed a lot of football, he was out for a long time and I think he’s just over the moon to be back playing, playing the way we know he can play.
“I was going to say he could get rested against Israel but it’s such a big game, you want to finish top of your group so he’ll probably play.
“I know the type of guy he, he’ll want to play every minute of every game. So, will Dean Smith be happy? Probably not, playing three games on international duty but it’s the way he is.
“I think if you were to ask John himself, even if he was tired he’d want to play and give his all so it’s just the mentality he’s got. He’ll be fine, he’s very robust, he can handle that and I’m sure he’ll go back healthy for the Brighton game.”
