Sources: Aston Villa open talks with club over Kalinic transfer

Hadjuk Split have opened talks with Aston Villa over a new move for Lovre Kalinic, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The goalkeeper, 31, returned to his homeland to spend last season on loan at the Croatian outfit.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that Split are working on a new deal for Kalinic after he slipped down the pecking order.

Manager Dean Smith has given the green light to Kalinic either leaving permanently or heading out on loan again in the upcoming season.

He was signed in 2019 for £7million and has a contract with the Midlands outfit that runs until the summer of 2023.

Since arriving at Villa Park he has only made eight appearances with all but one of them coming in the Championship.

His spell at Hadjuk Split was not his first loan move during his time at Villa.

Kalinic joined Toulouse for the 2019-20 season but only made four appearances for the club.

Last season was far more successful for the Croatian as he made 22 appearances in all competitions for Split.

He also captained the side on numerous occasions as Split secured a place in next season’s inaugural UEFA Conference League.

Kalinic’s only involvement for Villa last season was to feature on the bench for two Carabao Cup games.

He suffered with an injury in the early stages of last season, meaning he couldn’t attract a loan club until December.

As an international, Kalinic has 19 Croatia caps to his name.
