Sources: Birmingham City race Middlesbrough to sign Ameobi after Nottingham Forest exit

Birmingham City are racing Middlesbrough to sign Sammy Ameobi, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Championship duo want to strengthen their attacking options and have set their sights on the Newcastle United academy product following his Nottingham Forest exit.

A Birmingham source has told Football Insider that the club have identified Ameobi as a top target and will rival Boro for his signature.

Ameobi will be available on a free transfer when his Forest contract expires on Wednesday.

Football Insider learned on 22 June Middlesbrough had opened talks to re-sign the attacker.

The 29-year-old scored once in nine appearances during a loan spell in 2013 from Newcastle United.

He is a graduate of the Newcastle academy and played 70 games across all competitions for his boyhood club.

The former England Under-21 international quit the club in 2017 to join Bolton Wanderers.

After two years with the Trotters, he joined Nottingham Forest.

Ameobi scored eight times and provided 11 assists in 81 games for Forest across all competitions.

He has established himself as a solid Championship attacker as Birmingham City look to strengthen their squad.

Lee Bowyer has already added Chuks Aneke and Ryan Woods this summer as he looks to build on the strong end to last season.

The Blues were threatened with relegation before former midfielder Bowyer returned to the club in the middle of March.

He guided Birmingham to an 18th-place finish in the Championship, nine points above the bottom three.

In other news, Nottingham Forest have a “concrete” interest in signing a Watford 26-year-old.
