Sources: Middlesbrough open talks to re-sign Newcastle product Ameobi
Middlesbrough have opened talks to re-sign Newcastle United product Sammy Ameobi, Football Insider understands.
The 29-year-old forward is a free agent from the end of this month after being released by Nottingham Forest.
A club source has told Football Insider that Middlesbrough are now working on a deal for Ameobi and have begun discussions over a free transfer.
The Newcastle-born wide forward had a spell on loan at Boro in 2013 during his St James’ Park days.
Ameobi also had loan spells with Cardiff City and Bolton Wanderers before finally departing Newcastle.
He joined Wanderers on a permanent basis in July 2017 and quickly became a fan favourite.

The attacker’s season started in October due to injury but he was nominated for the player of the month award after bagging three goals in six games.
After two years with Bolton, Ameobi moved to Nottingham Forest as a free agent following financial issues at his former side.
He made 45 appearances for during his first season as his new side narrowly missed out on a playoff place.
Ameobi made nine appearances during his time at the Riverside and scored one goal.
The strike came on his debut, against future loan side Cardiff City.
Last season, Ameobi made 33 appearances for Forest, scoring three goals.
Neil Warnock’s side finished 10th in the Championship last season.
A poor end to the campaign dashed any hopes of taking a playoff place after avoiding relegation the previous year.
