Sources: Celtic agree £18m Ajer deal as new details emerge after medical

Celtic have agreed to sell Kristoffer Ajer to Brentford in a deal worth £18million in total, Football Insider has learned.

The Norway international, 23, has passed a medical at the Londoners while the clubs finalise the structure of the deal.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club have now come to an agreement on the fee, which is worth an initial £13.5m topped up by over £4m of add-ons.

It is a record-breaking deal for the Premier League new boys, who have made it a priority to strengthen at centre-back this summer.

Norwich also tabled a bid for Ajer but that is understood to have amounted to £11m.

As revealed by Football Insider (July 14th), Celtic rejected Brentford’s opening bid of £12million up front plus £3million in add-ons.

The Bhoys upped the defender’s asking price to around £20million amid interest from England and abroad.

However, it is understood a deal between £17.5million and £18million has now been struck between the two clubs.

Ajer is into the final year of his contract at Parkhead and is keen to leave Glasgow for a new challenge.

He joined the Hoops back in 2016 and last signed a contract extension in 2018.

The versatile centre-back has played 176 times across all competitions for Celtic.

During his time in Glasgow, he has won three Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups.

He is now set to join Brentford as the Bees prepare for their first season in the Premier League.

Thomas Frank’s men secured promotion from the Championship with victory over Swansea City in the play-off final.
