Celtic are in talks to sign Birmingham City defender Mitchell Roberts, Football Insider understands.

The Scottish giants are working on a deal to land the centre-back before the window north of the border shuts next Monday.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club are negotiating the capture of Roberts and are in pole position to land him in the coming days.

There is also interest from Premier League clubs in Roberts but the Hoops are hopeful of winning the race as the English window is closed and will not re-open until January.

Birmingham are willing to cash in on Roberts, who signed a one-year professional deal in June that runs until the end of the season.

He has yet to play for the Championship club's first team but has made impressive strides for the club's Under-23s.

The Hagley-born youngster has been with Birmingham since 2011 after catching the eye of club scouts while playing Sunday league football.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has claimed the club will be active in the final days of the window after a difficult summer in which they have struggled to recruit many of their top targets.
