Celtic are searching for a new goalkeeper after Craig Gordon tried in vain to secure a last-gasp January transfer, Football Insider can reveal.

The 37-year-old told the Hoops hierarchy he wanted to quit for Hearts after Football Insider exclusively broke the news last week that his former club were trying to sign him.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club have no plans to offer Gordon an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Recruitment chief Nicky Hammond has been instructed to start looking for a new senior keeper to replace Gordon in the summer.

Celtic face the prospect of needing two new arrivals in the key position as Fraser Forster is due to return to parent club Southampton when his loan expires.

The giant Englishman has been outstanding in his second spell at the club and is the undisputed number one.

Gordon has been his understudy for most of the campaign but has been a notable absentee from the Hoops matchday squad for the last two matches, since the transfer window shut.

Fit-again Scott Bain, who has missed virtually the entire season after dislocating a finger in August, was on the bench against Hamilton at the weekend and for the 4-0 win at Motherwell last night.

Gordon may have played his last game for Celtic after reigniting his career with his move in 2014.

He has made 242 appearances for the club and be an integral figure in the triple treble triumph that will go down in the annals of Scottish football.
