Exclusive: Celtic made last-gasp move to sign Cardiff City 24-yr-old

Celtic made a deadline-day bid to sign Cardiff City attacker Josh Murphy, Football Insider understands.

This site first revealed how the Hoops made a move last Friday for Newcastle United’s Christian Atsu but it was too late for a deal to be agreed.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club also made a move for Murphy, 24, and made contact with Cardiff about a potential loan deal.

The English Championship club were unwilling to let the winger go and the Hoops were once again frustrated.

Lennon was eager for the Scottish champions to sign another wide forward after Mikey Johnston broke down with suspected knee ligament damage last Wednesday.

Murphy was targeted because he had been in and out of the Cardiff team in the first half of the campaign.

He has made 10 Championship starts among 20 appearances for the Welsh outfit this season, but has started only two league games since September.

However, Murphy has made an impact in the FA Cup, scoring against Carlisle United in the third round and then twice in the 3-3 midweek thriller that Reading eventually won on penalties to book a place in the fifth round.

Murphy joined Cardiff for £10million from Norwich City in the summer of 2018 but has struggled to live up to that transfer free.

In 51 appearances for the Bluebirds, he has scored just seven times and assisted five goals.

In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that a £40,000-a-week goal machine is “very keen” on moving to Parkhead after big development.
