Sources: Conte tells Tottenham to sign De Vrij and believes January deal can be done

Antonio Conte wants Tottenham to sign Inter Milan colossus Stefan de Vrij in January, Football Insider understands.

The incoming Spurs boss has already identified an A-list centre-back as a top January priority following discussions with managing director Fabio Paratici.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that De Vrij, 29, has been mentioned by Conte as a top-class operator who could be lured from Inter.

The Holland international has a contract with Inter until the summer of 2023 and his rated at around the £40million mark.

Significantly, Conte’s former club are strapped for cash and struggled to pay their top stars at times last season.

Paratici believes a January deal could be done, especially given the imminent arrival of the serial-winning manager at Spurs.

Football Insider exclusively revealed at lunchtime on Monday that Conte had agreed to be the new manager and will take training for the first time this morning.

The whirlwind deal has been spearheaded by Paratici, who will also work closely with his former Juventus colleague over January signings.

De Vrij is said to be rated by Conte even more highly than Milan Skriniar, who came close to joining Spurs in the summer of 2020 and again in January of this year.

The Dutchman was a mainstay of Conte’s Inter side that romped to the recent Serie A title with a 12-point cushion.

Capped 54 times by Holland, he has an outstanding record operating in the three-man defence that has continued to be used this season since the summer exit of the Italian coach.

De Vrij has started 13 of Inter’s 14 Serie A and Champions League matches this term.
