Sources: Derby County and Portsmouth in race to sign Cardiff City star James Collins

Derby County and Portsmouth are chasing Cardiff City striker James Collins, Football Insider understands.

The Championship club are open to offers for the 31-year-old who has slipped down the pecking order following the appointment of Steve Morison last November.

An industry source has told Football Insider that Derby and Portsmouth are both looking to sign a proven striker and have registered their interest in Collins.

The Republic of Ireland international moved to the Cardiff City Stadium on a free transfer from Luton Town last summer.

He has 12 months remaining on his current contract.

Collins made 30 appearances across all competitions during the 2021-22 campaign, of which 13 of came from the start.

The centre-forward contributed three goals and one assist in those outings.

His goal return marks a significant drop-off from the the 2020-21 season in which he netted 13 times in 44 appearances for Luton.

Collins was all but surplus to requirements in the Welsh capital after the arrivals of Uche Ikpeazu and Jordan Hugill on loan in January.

A product of Aston Villa’s academy, Collins has enjoyed spells at Shrewsbury Town, Swindon, Hibernian, Northampton and Crawley during his career.

His most prolific spell came with the Hatters though, where he notched 72 goals in 183 games to help them climb to the Championship from League Two.

Collin has 14 caps for the Republic of Ireland to his name and has scored twice.
