Sources: Ipswich Town plot raid for Sunderland striker Grigg amid Cook reveal

Ipswich Town have set their sights on signing Sunderland striker Will Grigg this summer, Football Insider can reveal.

The 29-year-old has reignited his career on loan at MK Dons but his future beyond the summer is in major doubt.

An Ipswich source has told Football Insider that new Town manager Paul Cook is a “huge fan” of Grigg and will pull out all the stops to sign him.

Cook and Grigg worked together at Wigan Athletic where Grigg fired 19 goals in 43 League One games to fire the Latics to promotion in the 2017/18 season.

Sunderland then signed Grigg the following January after Wigan earned promotion and Cook described him as “an absolute diamond of a bloke” after his sale.

The Northern Ireland international has not rediscovered his goalscoring form at the Stadium of Light and was shipped out on loan to MK Dons in the winter window.

He has scored three goals and provided three assists in seven starts since joining the Dons.

His loan at Stadium MK expires at the end of the season when he will still have a year left to run on his Sunderland contract.

However, Football Insider pundit and Black Cats legend Kevin Phillips does not see a future for him in red and white.

He told Football Insider last month: “Could he return to Sunderland? I think both player and club will want to move on this summer. I think they will shake hands and be done with it.”

In other news, Sunderland are locked in a transfer battle with a Championship club for an Ipswich Town winger.
