Source's Jullien update is 'huge' for Celtic - McAvennie

Frank McAvennie insists Christopher Jullien’s return from injury can’t come soon enough for Celtic.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the defender.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider (7 September), Jullien is not expected to return for the Bhoys until next month at the earliest.

He has been missing since suffering a serious knee injury late in 2020.

However, Ange Postecoglou has named the French centre-back among his Europa League squad.

The centre half also missed some games in the early stages of last season with a back injury.

Despite this, McAvennie insists Jullien‘s return will provide a boost to a Hopps defence that is still leaking goals.

“Jullien coming back is only good news,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Celtic are still leaking goals, the good thing is we are also scoring a lot at the moment.

“There is no one in that defence that’s safe. If mistakes are made then Julien will just come straight in.

“We have missed him at times but he’s been out for so long. There’s no guarantee he’s the same player he was.

“We need cover or at the very least, more options, in that backline. He can be huge for Celtic on those European nights.

“The players who are there now need to know they can be replaced if they keep making mistakes.

“Leaking those goals in Postecoglou’s big problem.”

Celtic are gearing up for a return to European action this week.

They travel to Spain to face Real Betis on Thursday.
