Leeds United are keen to exploit the Reading cash crisis as they set their sights on a fresh swoop for John Swift.

The Yorkshire giants were keen on the 25-year-old this time last year and, as Football Insider recently revealed, have reignited their interest ahead of the summer window.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that the club are confident it will take far less than the £7million asking price of 2019 to seal a deal.

This is partly due to a readjusted transfer window in the wake of the pandemic and also Reading's own financial problems.

The reality of the crisis affecting Championship team came into focus yesterday when Wigan Athletic became the first professional club to go into administration since Covid-19.

Swift is certainly one of Reading's prize assets and his star remains high after another outstanding campaign in a mid-table side.

The central midfielder, who can also play in attacking midfield, has scored five goals and supplied 10 assists from 35 league appearances this season.

He has just entered the final two years of his contract at Reading, which runs until the summer of 2022.

This summer could be an opportune time for the club to cash in on him and they are braced for summer bids.

The Berkshire outfit are 16th in the Championship table after their midweek defeat to Brentford and are certain to remain in the second tier again next season.

Leeds top the league and are well placed for automatic promotion despite being held to a Tuesday night 1-1 draw.
