Liverpool have registered their interest in signing Portugese sensation Joao Felix with his agent Jorge Mendes, Football Insider understands.
The Merseysiders have been keeping close tabs on the 19-year-old attacker and scouts watched as he scored a hat-trick in Benfica’s 4-2 Europa League quarter final first-leg win over Frankfurt last Thursday.
A club source has told Football Insider that Liverpool have made their interest in Felix clear to super-agent Mendes although they have no intention of paying the £106million release clause inserted in the new contract he signed last November.
The Premier League title challengers face competition from Europe’s elite, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, for the signature of the highly rated Portugal Under-21 international.
Felix has made a huge impact for Benfica since breaking into their team earlier this season, scoring 16 goals and providing nine assists from 37 appearances for the club.
The rising star of European football followed up his Europa League masterclass with another man-of-the-match display in the Portugese league on Sunday.
He can play anywhere in attack, including on the flanks and as the central striker, but his primary position for Benfica is as a playmaking number 10.
