Sources: Major update on Aston Villa bid to sign Joe Gomez as 'number one' priority revealed

Steven Gerrard has made Liverpool star Joe Gomez his number one priority ahead of the summer window as he plots another big-name Aston Villa signing, Football Insider understands.

The Midlands giants made a move for the 24-year-old in January but were knocked back as Jurgen Klopp was not willing to let him go in the middle of the season.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that Gerrard is already plotting another swoop for Gomez going into the main window.

It is said that the England international is the “number one priority” for the Villa boss as he looks to take advantage once again of his Liverpool connections.

Klopp could have no choice but to listen to offers for Gomez in the main window if he pushes hard for a move.

The defender has made just one Premier League start all season among 13 appearances in all competitions after missing most of last campaign with a knee injury.

He has slipped to fourth choice centre-back at Anfield behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and 2021 arrival Ibrahima Konate.

Gomez is out of contract in the summer of 2024 and his value has diminished over the last two seasons.

Liverpool could be forced to accept an offer of around £30million this summer.

Gerrard is said to be a “huge admirer” of Gomez and was hopeful that a deal could be reached in January.

The ex-Charlton defender has long been regarded as an elite defender and has 11 England caps in total.

But injuries have disrupted his progress at Liverpool, where he has made 134 appearances in seven years.
