Sources: Major update on Tottenham bid to sign James Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse will definitely leave Southampton if they get relegated and Tottenham are keen to sign him, sources have told Football Insider.

Spurs are big admirers of the England international and are likely to make a move for him at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old joined the Saints in 2012 and his current contract at St Mary’s runs until 2026 after he signed an extension in 2021.

But the midfielder’s tenure at Southampton could come to an end this year if the side a relegated from the Premier League.

The Saints are bottom of the English top flight with ten games left of the 2022-23 season and are facing a real threat of being relegated.

As relayed by Opta (13 March), the dead-ball king is closing in on David Beckham’s record of the most free-kick goals in the Premier League and is just one behind Beckham’s 18 goal tally.

Ward-Prowse scored his 17th free-kick goal in Southampton’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea last month which was also the sixth time he has scored a winning goal with a direct free-kick.

Tottenham are set for a massive summer as they attempt to keep hold of star man Harry Kane as well as potentially finding a new manager.

On Monday (20 March), Football Insider revealed that Tottenham have decided to end the Italian’s reign in the wake of his incendiary rant last Saturday after the 3-3 draw against Southampton.

Regardless of who is in charge of the club by the time the transfer window opens, they will be looking to add strength and creativity to the central midfield.
