Sources: Newcastle and Crystal Palace set sights on signing Leeds product Wilks from Hull City

Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are plotting moves to sign Hull City forward Mallik Wilks, Football Insider understands.

The Leeds United academy product was in red-hot form for the Tigers this season as he spearheaded their League One title triumph.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider the 22-year-old’s outstanding form has caught the attention of several clubs at the top of English football.

It is understood Newcastle and Palace are among those most interested in snapping up the versatile attacker.

Both Premier League clubs are in the market for a new centre-forward this summer.

At 22, Wilks is viewed as an exciting prospect who could make the step up the divisions.

Able to play as a striker or on either flank, the Leeds-born star scored 22 goals and contributed nine assists for Hull across all competitions this season.

He was the joint-fifth highest scorer in the third tier with 19 goals, despite playing predominantly as a right-winger.

A graduate of Leeds’ youth system, he played once for the Whites but had loan spells across the Football League.

His performances at Doncaster, with 16 goals and 12 assists to his name, earned him a permanent move to Barnsley.

Having failed to replicate his form in a struggling Tykes side, he moved on loan to Hull in January 2019.

Wilks netted five times to convince the Tigers to make his stay permanent last summer.

He signed a two-year deal, although Hull City have an optional clause to extend his terms by 12 months.

In other news, Newcastle United have triggered a clause to keep exit-bound star on Tyneside.
