Newcastle United have made a £4million move to hijack midfielder Lucien Agoume's move to Inter Milan, Football Insider understands.

The Sochaux teenager, 17, is on the verge of securing a transfer to the Italian giants that could be worth up to £6million including add-ons.

An Italian source has told Football Insider that Newcastle have tried to ambush the deal with a £4million bid for the rising star.

But Agoume has his heart set on a transfer to Inter Milan and it is expected that the Premier League club's bid to turn his his head at the eleventh hour is doomed to failure.

Barcelona, Paris St-Germain and RB Leipzig had also been keeping close tabs on Agoume, who was born in Cameroon but is a French youth international.

His agent appeared to confirm the move could be imminently moving to Serie A by posting an image on Instagram showing him boarding a flight to Milan.

Agoume has been compared to Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba for his athleticism and power, and has been on Newcastle's radar for many months.

A rising star in France, the creative midfielder played in 16 games last season for his club in all competitions, 15 of which came in Ligue 2, despite only turning 17 in February.
