Newcastle United have shortlisted James Maddison and Scott McTominay as midfield targets this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies are keen to overhaul their midfield department at the end of the season, with Eddie Howe highlighting it as an area of weakness in his current squad.

Howe is eager to tie Bruno Guimaraes down to a long-term deal in Tyneside and use the Brazilian as a centre-piece to his midfield project.

Maddison has been a long-term target for Newcastle, and they will return to Leicester with reignited interest in the summer after two bids were rejected for the 26-year-old playmaker in January.

Howe is also a big admirer of McTominay and is keeping tabs on his situation at Old Trafford amid his lack of playing time.

Newcastle's midfield was weakened in January through the loss of Jonjo Shelvey and Howe is aware of the lack of depth his side now has in that area.

Maddison has been in good form for the Foxes this season, scoring nine and assisting five in 20 appearances across all competitions.

McTominay has fallen behind the likes of Casemiro and Fred in the pecking order at Old Trafford but has still managed 28 appearances for the Red Devils this season, scoring 2 goals in the process.
