Sources: Newcastle three-man shopping list revealed - all are perfect Eddie Howe players

Newcastle United have created a three-player shortlist of Premier League stars ahead of the transfer window opening, sources have told Football Insider.

The Tyneside club are eager to bolster their midfield in the summer and have highlighted Harvey Barnes, Mason Mount and James Ward-Prowse as top targets.

The Magpies are searching for a midfielder to join Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes and create a long-term trio in the middle of the park, while Eddie Howe is also pushing to add some creativity to his squad.

Declan Rice was a top target for Newcastle, but Football Insider sources revealed on Friday (21 April) that the North East club have pulled the plug on signing Rice after West Ham put a £80-100million price tag on his signature.

Instead, Newcastle have turned their attention towards three other English stars who could become available this summer.

Barnes and Ward-Prowse are both considered key players at Leicester and Southampton respectively, but both sides are resigned to losing them if relegated this season.

The Foxes and Saints sit 19th and 20th in the table and are inching closer to becoming Championship sides next season.

Howe has followed a transfer strategy of signing English players with Premier League experience since being appointed at Newcastle, and all three of his summer targets continue to follow that pattern.

Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon have all followed Howe’s strategy, and Newcastle plan to stick to it after their success this season.

While Ward-Prowse and Barnes could be made available on discount prices if relegated, Newcastle hope Mount’s contract situation will lower his asking price this summer too.

Mount’s contract with the Blues expires next season, and Football Insider sources revealed on 1 April that the 24-year-old has rejected a £180,000-per week deal at Stamford Bridge.
