Sources: Nottingham Forest, Stoke City and Sheffield United race to sign Garner

Nottingham Forest, Stoke City and Sheffield United are battling it out to sign Manchester United midfielder James Garner on loan, Football Insider has learned.

The Championship trio have set their sights on the 20-year-old rising star ahead of the 31 August cut-off.

A United source has told Football Insider that the club will not sanction Garner leaving on loan until he has signed a new contract.

The promising midfielder last signed an extension as an 18-year-old back in 2019.

His current deal is set to expire next summer, although United have the option to extend it by a further year.

However, the Premier League giants are pushing to tie him down to new terms before giving him the green light to leave temporarily again.

Garner spent the first half of last season on loan at Watford and played 21 times for the Hornets.

He then moved across the Championship to join Nottingham Forest in the January window.

The midfielder managed to make 20 appearances and score four goals during his spell at the City Ground.

Forest are understood to be keen on re-signing Garner this summer but face competition from their second-tier rivals.

New Sheffield United boss Slavisa Jokanovic is looking to bolster his midfield following the Blades’ relegation last season.

Meanwhile, Stoke are also keen on adding Garner to their ranks before the window shuts.

A graduate of the Manchester United academy, Garner has played seven times for the senior side at Old Trafford.

He has also featured for England’s youth sides from under-17s to under-20s.
