Peterborough United have set their sights on signing former striker Jack Marriott from Derby County, Football Insider can reveal.

The Championship new boys sold Marriott to Derby in the summer of 2018 after he scored 27 League One goals in his debut season at the club.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider Peterborough now want the 26-year-old back following their promotion to the second tier.

Hull City are also interested in Marriott as a race between the newly-promoted sides shapes up.

Derby County confirmed in their retained list they remained in contract talks with the striker whose current deal expires at the end of the month.

That came as a surprise to fans as he penned a 12-month extension in October 2020 before joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan.

However, the registration approval was withdrawn by the EFL in December.

Marriott endured a difficult spell with Wednesday as he failed to score in 12 Championship appearances as they suffered relegation.

Hull are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements and could offer the Beverley-born ace a return to East Yorkshire.

Peterborough were the top scorers in League One last term despite finishing two points and a place behind champions City.

Goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris and Siriki Dembele fired the Posh to promotion.

Meanwhile, director of football Barry Fry admitted to ThisIsFutbol on 23 May that Clarke-Harris could be sold this summer amid interest from Rangers.
