Sources: Preston North End agree to sign Man United starlet Alvaro Fernandez

Preston North End have agreed a deal to sign Man United defender Alvaro Fernandez on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

United have given the green light to let Fernandez leave for next season as Erik ten Hag is well stocked in the left-back department.

Preston have moved to offer the 19-year-old a loan to Deepdale and a full agreement is now in place.

Fernandez is well regarded at Old Trafford and was named as the club’s Under-23s Player of the Season last term.

He notched four goals and six assists across 31 games for United’s youth sides last season and was named on the senior bench for the final four games of the Premier League campaign.

The defender is out of contract next summer, three years after joining Man United from Real Madrid.

Fernandez is now ready for his first taste of senior football at Deepdale after his success at youth level.

He was spotted amongst the crowd as the Lancashire side took on Leicester in a pre-season friendly on Saturday (23 July).

As quoted by the Lancashire Evening News post-match, Ryan Lowe confirmed he was “hopeful” of reaching an agreement for Fernandez after “tracking him for some time”.

An agreement has now been reached and the Spain Under-19 international will join up with his new teammates prior to the first game of the season on Saturday (30 July).

The Spaniard will compete with left-back pair Greg Cunningham, 31, and Andrew Hughes, 30, for a first-team berth at Preston.

Ryan Lowe’s side finished 13th in the Championship last term.

Preston take on Hull City on Saturday (30 July) as the new season gets underway.
