Reading have set their sights on signing Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton, Football Insider understands.

Leeds are open to letting their academy product leave on loan this summer as he is likely to be down the pecking order in Jesse Marsch's plans.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that a number of clubs have expressed an interest in taking Shackleton, 22, on loan.

Paul Ince is hoping to lure the former England Under-20 international to Reading as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Shackleton, who made 16 appearances in all competitions last term, only featured once following the arrival of Marsch in February.

He has operated mainly as cover for Luke Ayling at right-back since the Whites won promotion back to the Premier League in 2020.

They have signed right-back Rasmus Kristensen from Red Bull Salzburg this summer which has pushed Shackleton further down the pecking order.

At Reading he would likely feature in his preferred position of midfield after they lost key players John Swift, Josh Laurent and Andy Rinomhota to West Brom, Stoke City and Cardiff City on free transfers.

Shackleton still has two years left to run on his current Leeds contract and will be hoping a loan move away will give him a chance to impress with a consistent run of games.

He has played 79 times for the Yorkshire giants since his debut in August 2018, including 10 Premier League starts.
