Sources: Reading set sights on signing the ‘Colombian Alexander-Arnold’

Reading have set their sights on signing Deportivo Pasto right-back Esneyder Mena this summer, Football Insider can reveal.

The 23-year-old is available on a free transfer this summer and has come to the attention of a number of Championship clubs.

A source has told Football Insider Reading lead the chase for Mena, who has been converted from the wing to a defensive role with great success.

His technical ability, brilliant crossing and long-range passing have led to him being dubbed ‘the Trent Alexander-Arnold of Colombian football’.

His appearances in last season’s Copa Sudamericana mean GBE entry points will not be an issue for Mena.

Mena started both legs as Deportivo Pasto crashed out of the competition in the first round to La Equidad in April.

He has provided nine assists in 34 games across all competitions for the Colombian outfit.

Reading are in desperate need of full-back reinforcements after the departures of Omar Richards, Lewis Gibson and Tomas Esteves.

Injury-prone Andy Yiadom is the Royals’ only senior full-back option going into the 2021-22 campaign.

The 29-year-old ended the season as Veljko Paunović’s first-choice right-back but he missed the beginning of the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

Despite a fine start to the recently-completed campaign, Reading finished the season in seventh-position, seven points behind the play-off places.

They ended the season with a run of just one win in their final 11 games.
