Newcastle United are preparing a new bid for Dan Burn after he made it clear he wants to join the club from Brighton, Football Insider has learned.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that they are hopeful of landing Burn, 29, by next Monday despite having an initial offer of £8m rejected.

They are planning to return to the negotiating table with an improved offer in an attempt to secure an agreement.

Boyhood Toon fan Burn is believed to be keen to return to the north-east and sign for Newcastle.

He made that clear to his camp on Wednesday night as the possibility grows that a deal can be agreed.

Newcastle are working on multiple defender deals as they look to recruit at least one, and possibly two, by the cut-off.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe gave the move the green light as he looks to add a left-sided centre-back to his ranks this month.

Burn has 18 months left on his contract with the Seagulls.

Notably, he is a boyhood Newcastle fan, having been born in the north east town of Blyth.

Burn spent time among Newcastle's youth coaching scheme but was released by the club as an 11-year-old.

He has since had spells at Darlington, Fulham, Wigan and current club Brighton, who he joined in January 2019.

Burn has played 85 times for the south coast outfit, which include 83 Premier League appearances.

Howe currently has Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez as his senior centre-back options.

Emil Krafth and Paul Dummett have also been used as makeshift central defenders at various times in recent seasons.
