Sources: Stoke City in advanced talks to sign Man City striker Delap

Stoke City are close to signing Man City striker Liam Delap, Football Insider understands.

The Potters have set their sights on landing the 18-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best English players in his age group.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Stoke are in advanced talks to sign Delap on loan following a breakthrough in discussions.

Delap signed for Man City in 2019 after spending 10 years coming through the ranks at Derby County.

The forward was in incredible form for City’s youth sides last season.

Delap managed to score 24 goals in just 20 Premier League 2 outings last term.

This form clearly caught the eye of Pep Guardiola as Delap was handed three appearances for the first team.

He was given 39 Premier League minutes as City lost 5-2 to Leicester at the start of the season.

That was before Delap scored his first goal on his first start as Guardiola’s side beat Bournemouth 2-1 in the FA Cup.

Liam is the son of Stoke City icon Rory Delap, who remains at the club as a first-team coach.

Rory made 208 appearances for the Potters during his career and remains popular with the fans.

Stoke have already shored up their defence this summer with the capture of Ben Wilmot from Watford.

The Potters will be hoping to improve on last season’s 14th placed finish in the Championship.

Stoke started well last season before a COVID outbreak and injuries to key men saw their form slip away.
