Sources: Sunderland race Blackpool to sign Forest star Gabriel

Sunderland have joined Blackpool in the race to sign Nottingham Forest defender Jordan Gabriel, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Blackpool have lodged an offer for their 2020-21 loan star as they look to lure the right-back on a permanent deal.

A Sunderland source has told Football Insider that the club have also made an approach for Gabriel.

Forest are listening to offers for the defender ahead of the window cut-off next month.

The 22-year-old has three years left to run on his Forest contract.

He penned a new four-year deal last summer before heading to Bloomfield Road on loan.

The London-born ace played 35 times across all competitions for Blackpool last term.

That includes both legs of the play-off semi-final but he remained on the bench for the victory over Lincoln City in the final.

Gabriel also featured twice for Forest at the beginning of the campaign before moving to Blackpool.

He would therefore offer Sunderland valuable experience as they attempt to earn promotion out of League One at the fourth time of asking.

They reached the play-off semi-finals under Lee Johnson last season before being beaten by Lincoln.

Johnson has already bolstered his ranks with the addition of experienced duo Alex Pritchard and Corry Evans.

Meanwhile, Blackpool have signed defenders Richard Keogh, Oliver Casey and Reece James as they prepare for life back in the Championship.

The upcoming campaign will be their first season back in the second-tier for six seasons.

In other news, Kevin Phillips has claimed Sunderland have a “real reason to be excited” after a new signing is completed.
