Sunderland are working on a deal to sign Northampton Town youngster Tom Scott after he dazzled on trial, Football Insider can reveal.
The attacking midfielder is only on a scholarship deal at Northampton and the Black Cats are ready to offer him a professional contract.
A source has told Football Insider Sunderland regard Scott as a first-team star of the future.
The right-footer is yet to make his first-team debut for the Cobblers but has been a key member of the club’s Under-18s side.
He recently scored a stunning 20-yard free-kick that was nominated for the League Football Education’s goal of the month award.
The 18-year-old would likely link up with Sunderland’s Under-23s side next season who compete in Premier League 2 Division 2.
Lee Johnson has not been afraid to call upon Under-23s players this season with defender Ollie Younger recently getting called up to the senior squad.
Meanwhile, Elliot Emberton has shone on loan at Blackpool and Kevin Phillips has tipped Josh Hawkes to make a big impression next season.
The Black Cats saw their hopes of automatic promotion all but dashed at the weekend.
They are nine points behind Peterborough United in second place with three games to play.
Sunderland will likely have to settle for a place in the play-offs after failing to win any of their last five League One games.
Last season they finished just outside the top six and in the 2018/19 campaign they lost to Charlton Athletic in the play-off final.
