Erik ten Hag has told Man United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka that he is free to leave this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 25-year-old came close to leaving Old Trafford in January but ended up staying after a number of injuries to defensive players in the squad.

Wan-Bissaka has been made to compete with Diogo Dalot for the starting spot on the right of the defence, and it is understood that Ten Hag would rather keep hold of hte Portugal international.

United have been linked to various right-backs in recent seasons, with Ten Hag identifying it as a 'problem area' within his squad.

Football Insider sources revealed on Friday (7 April) that Man United are in pole position to sign Jeremie Frimpong in a £40million move.

It is understood that the Frimpong deal being agreed would accelerate Wan-Bissaka's exit this summer.

Wan-Bissaka endured a torrid start to the 2022/23 campaign, often struggling to even make the matchday squad for United under Ten Hag.

After falling down the pecking order and suffering a back injury, Wan-Bissaka only played four minutes of Premier League football between the start of the season and Christmas.

However, Wan-Bissaka was handed his opportunity in the side when Dalot was injured, and he took it with both hands. He now has 23 appearances under his belt this season across all competitions.

But Wan-Bissaka's on-the-ball ability is lacking compared to his superior defending, and Ten Hag is keen to evolve and modernise United's backline with a more technical player.
