Tottenham agreed a new contract with Toby Alderweireld after being knocked back by Norwich City in their pursuit of Ben Godfrey, Football Insider can reveal.
Spurs announced yesterday that the Belgium international, 30, has committed his future to the club until the summer of 2023.
A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the deal is worth around £120,000-a-week for the centre-back, nearly £22million across the entirety of the contract.
The news has been welcomed almost universally by Spurs fans and comes just 10 days before he was free to negotiate a pre-contract with overseas clubs in January.
Tottenham have been seeking alternative options to Alderweireld and his fellow centre-back Jan Vertonghen, whose deal expires at the end of the season.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, the Londoners have set their sights on Norwich’s Ben Godfrey among others.
However, Daniel Farke’s side have knocked back their interest and let it be known the 21-year-old is not for sale in January.
Godfrey, who joined Norwich from York City in 2016, established himself as a key player at Carrow Road as they stormed to the Championship title in the last campaign and his stature has continued to grow in the top flight.
He has played the full 90 minutes of all 17 of Norwich’s Premier League matches this season and earned rave reviews for his performances.
The youngster’s price tag has soared to between £20-25million after signing a new contract in June that runs until 2023.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have invited forward to Sunday’s clash, he’ll meet Mourinho for talks.
