Tottenham are stepping up their bid to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as their battle with Everton hots up.

Jose Mourinho's team have made the Southampton midfielder one of their top summer targets but must fend off the Merseysiders to seal a deal.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the club have been calling the Saints man's camp "every day" to convince him to swap the south coast for north London.

The BBC reported last night that Everton have opened talks with Southampton and have offered £14million plus add-ons for Hojbjerg.

Tottenham are yet to submit a formal bid for the midfield anchorman but are working behind the scenes on luring him when the window opens on 27 July.

Southampton had valued him at around the £25million mark in January but £20m may be enough to seal the deal this summer.

The Denmark international has knocked back multiple Saints attempts to extend his deal expiring next year and gone public with his desire to join a more ambitious club.

Tellingly, he has been stripped of the Southampton captaincy by Ralph Hasenhuttl and was omitted from the squad for two matches before returning for the last three.

He played the full match at right-back last night as they drew 1-1 against Brighton, with Spurs loanee Kyle Walker-Peters dropping down to the bench.

Hojbjerg played a pivotal role in Southampton's revival either side of the lockdown before his omission.

The former Bayern Munich star has started 30 of Southampton's 36 Premier League matches this season among 37 appearances in all competitions.
