Tottenham have been given encouragement in their pursuit of in-demand Schalke star Weston McKennie, Football Insider understands.
The Bundesliga club have financial problems and are likely to cash in on the 21-year-old this summer even though he signed a new five-year contract last year.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Spurs have been told that a fee of around £20million will be enough to prise McKennie from Schalke.
This comes after we revealed yesterday that Jose Mourinho is an admirer of McKennie and is keen to lure him to north London.
The 19-times USA international is also on the target list of Inter Milan and Hertha Berlin.
Significantly, he is understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League and to join a side where he can play regularly.
Tottenham are in the market for a new central midfielder this summer and are pursuing Southampton star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
It remains to be seen if McKennie is an alternative to the Denmark international or a first choice target.
He has different profile to Hojbjerg as he can operate at centre-back – as he did at Schalke earlier this season – as well as in central midfield.
The club’s manager David Wagner has hailed the USA star as “a top lad, a dream to work with”.
McKennie is a mainstay of the Schalke XI and started 24 of their 34 Bundesliga matches in the recently-completed campaign.
Since signing from MLS outfit FC Dallas in 2016, the USA international has made 91 appearances for the German club.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have slapped in a £15million-plus offer for dazzling Premier League star.
