Tottenham are increasingly confident of agreeing a new contract with Eric Dier this summer, Football Insider has learned.

The Spurs hierarchy are keen to keep the 26-year-old and want to tie him down before he enters the final 12 months of his deal next month.

This site reported last week that talks have begun over a new deal following a change of heart from the hierarchy due to the pandemic.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the early signs are positive that an agreement can be reached over a new long-term contract.

The England international's versatility is valued by Jose Mourinho and he is expected to be used at centre-back as well as his more usual defensive midfield role when the season resumes.

His availability for the first match against Man United on Friday of next week may depend upon the outcome of an FA decision.

Dier was charged after he entered the crowd following Spurs' FA Cup defeat to Norwich and the verdict is set to come in before the United clash.

He still has much to do to restore the status that once made him a mainstay of the starting XI for club and country, including for most of Mauricio Pochettino's reign.

A combination of injuries, illness and mixed form has seen him drop down the pecking order over the last two years.

Dier has struggled for regular playing time this season, starting just 10 Premier League matches among 25 appearances in all competitions.
