Tottenham have submitted a new and improved bid for Real Betis attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, Football Insider understands.

The north Londoners have made a fresh move to persuade the Spanish club to part with the 23-year-old Argentine following his outstanding season.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider the club they are willing to “smash their transfer record” to land Lo Celso after upping their opening offer of £53million to £60million.

The current record outlay for the Champions League finalists was the £42million paid to Ajax for Davinson Sanchez in the summer of 2014.

Lo Celso has an £88million release clause in his contract, which also stipulates that Betis must pay 20 per cent of the transfer fee to his former club Paris Saint-Germain.

The La Liga club exercised an option to sign him permanently for £21 million in April as he completed a magnificent campaign in which his 45 matches in all competitions yielded 16 goals and six assists.

Lo Celso was especially impressive in the Europa League, scoring five goals from seven matches, and Tottenham are convinced he can be a real force in the Premier League and Champions League next season.

They are unlikely to stretch as far as the £88million release clause in Lo Celso’s contract, and hope Betis will cave in before that point.

In other Spurs news, a pundit has hailed the imminent signing of a Tottenham player for multi-millions by a northern club as a “massive coup”.
