West Brom are keen to beat Leeds United to the signing of Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick this month, Football Insider can reveal.
Both of the Championship promotion hopefuls have set their sights on the Republic of Ireland international, 32, as they look to strengthen up front this month.
A West Brom source has told Football Insider that the club are ready to blow Leeds away by offering a better financial package to seal a deal for McGoldrick.
This comes after Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Leeds had turned their attention to McGoldrick as they look to recruit a new striker this month.
Both Marcelo Bielsa and Slaven Bilic, the managers of the Championship’s top two placed clubs, have been told that the 11-times international may be available this month.
However, there are other clubs interested in him, including some from the Premier League, as well as Leeds and West Brom.
McGoldrick has been a regular for Chris Wilder’s side this season, starting 15 Premier League matches among 18 appearances in all competitions.
However, he has not scored a single goal and has provided only two assists despite being the main centre-forward in many of the games.
McGoldrick has 18 months remaining on his Blades deal and that has given hope to his suitors that a January deal can be done for him.
The former Ipswich Town, Southampton and Nottingham Forest forward has an impressive Championship record, where his 318 appearances have yielded 75 goals and 30 assists.
United manager Bielsa admitted at his media briefing yesterday he wants a new forward to replace Eddie Nketiah, who was recalled by Arsenal last week.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that Yorkshire club have hijacked bid to sign defender who’s heading to Thorp Arch next week.
