Sources: West Brom make move to sign Aston Villa star Conor Hourihane

West Brom have set their sights on signing Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane, Football Insider understands.

The Republic of Ireland international, 31, is out of contract at Villa at the end of next month and will be available as a free agent.

A West Brom source has told Football Insider that the club have registered their interest in Hourihane as they look to win the race for his signature.

Manager Steve Bruce is a big admirer of the creative midfielder and was the Villa manager when he was signed from Barnsley in January 2017.

Hourihane has just completed a season-long loan at Championship club Sheffield United.

But he struggled for game time at Bramall Lane and made just 15 league starts across the campaign.

There was interest from Norwich City, and another of his former Villa bosses Dean Smith in January, but Hourihane ended up staying in Yorkshire.

Hourihane is not expected to secure a new deal at Villa and is in line to leave as a free agent.

He had slipped down the pecking order under Smith at Villa Park last season following huge investment in the playing squad.

Hourihane had been an integral player in Smith’s first two season’s at Villa Park before dropping to the fringes ahead of joining Swansea City in the second half of last season.

The left-footed midfielder was a key player for the Swans as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

He has extensive Championship experience, with his 173 appearances in the competition yielding 31 goals and 35 assists.
