West Ham have made an approach for Aston Villa defender Kortney Hause, Football Insider has learned.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that Hause, 26, is also on the radar of West Ham and they have registered their interest in a potential January deal.

His contract with Villa is due to expire at the end of the season but Football Insider has learned the club have the option to extend it by 12 months.

That would enable the Midlands outfit to secure a higher fee for Hause this month.

Alternatively, they could extend his deal until 2023 and then loan him out before the 31 January cut-off.

Steven Gerrard has given the green light to Hause leaving if he is able to recruit a new centre-back this month.

The former Wolves man has climbed up to third in the pecking order behind first choice pair Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konza following the departure of Man United loanee Axel Tuanzebe.

West Ham are in the market for a proven centre-back following serious injuries to Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna.

Hause fits the bill as he can play both centre-back and at left-back, as well as play in the left of a three-man defence.

Hause has struggled for game time since since joining from Wolves in the summer of 2019 for a fee of around £3m.

He has played 53 times for the Midlands giants after accumulating 80 appearances for Wolves.

This season, Hause has made seven appearances in all competitions.

That includes only four Premier League starts, the last of which came in the 2-1 defeat by Brentford last Sunday.
