Wigan Athletic have registered their interest in signing Rangers wide man Jordan Jones, Football Insider understands.

The winger, 26, has been told by the Ibrox hierarchy he is free to find a new club despite featuring in pre-season.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Jones would like to secure a permanent return south of the border after an impressive loan spell at Sunderland.

Wigan have been in contact over signing the Northern Ireland international on a permanent deal.

Sunderland are also keen to convert Jones' 2020-21 loan into a permanent deal but his asking price is a major issue for them.

Rangers are believed to be willing to let the attacker go for less than £1million.

His 21 matches at Sunderland in the second half of last season yielded three goals and four assists, although it was not enough to secure promotion from League One.

Intriguingly, the Black Cats begin their League One campaign on 7 August against Wigan at the Stadium of Light.

Jones fell foul of the Ibrox hierarchy last November after breaching Covid rules to attend a party with George Edmundson.

That incurred a lengthy suspension and led to him being frozen out of Gerrard's squad before being loaned to Sunderland in January.

Meanwhile, Edmundson is closing in on a permanent move to Ipswich Town for a fee of around £1million.
