Sources: Wycombe Wanderers in advanced talks to sign Vokes from Stoke City

Wycombe Wanderers are in advanced talks to sign Stoke City striker Sam Vokes, Football Insider has learned.

Football Insider revealed on 16 June Stoke were set to allow Vokes to leave this summer with just 12 months left on his contract.

A Wycombe source has now told Football Insider they are in advanced talks over a potential move.

League One rivals Shrewsbury Town had set their sights on a potential loan move for the 31-year-old in June.

However, it now appears Wycombe are in the driving seat.

The Chairboys are in the market for attacking reinforcements after suffering relegation from the Championship last term.

They have sold last season’s top goalscorer Uche Ikpeazu to Middlesborough this summer.

The 26-year-old scored six times and provided four assists in 31 Championship games last season.

Vokes could offer Gareth Ainsworth a proven alternative with League One experience.

The Wales international scored seven goals and contributed three assists in 62 games in England’s third-tier for Bournemouth and Leeds United earlier on in his career.

Vokes has found goals harder to come by in recent seasons though.

He ended last season with just one goal – a header against Aston Villa in the EFL Cup.

In the Championship, his 30 appearances, including just five starts, yielded no goals and no assists.

Ainsworth will be eyeing an instant return to the Championship after Wycombe played out their only season in the second-tier without fans.

He has already added Josh Scowen and Sullay Kaikai to his squad for the upcoming campaign.

In other news, Stoke City may miss out on a striker target because of an England legend.
