Spurs Exclusive: Danny Mills suggests the reason Mourinho doesn't trust Sessegnon

Danny Mills insisted Ryan Sessegnon has yet to win the trust of Jose Mourinho due to “one or two issues” as Tottenham bowed out of the Champions League.

The former Leeds United full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the manager does not have faith in the 19-year-old even though he was preferred to Jan Vertonghen for last night’s 3-0 defeat at RB Leipzig.

Sessegnon was used as a left wing-back as Spurs were comfortably brushed aside on a chastening evening in Germany.

This came after he had struggled to win the favour of Mourinho, with many fans baffled that he watched on from the bench as Spurs drew 1-1 at Turf Moor last Saturday.

When asked why Sessegnon has played so rarely since gaining full fitness, Mills told Football Insider“Mourinho does not trust him. Again, he has had injury problems and one or two issues.

“We know what Mourinho is like, he wants consistency. Sessegnon was not fit for the early part of the season and you are going to a new club – you are behind. It is tough when you go to a club and the expectations are high but you are already playing catchup. The manager has also changed, there have been all sorts going on.

“It has been a very difficult season for Sessegnon. He has had a couple of chances but he is still a young player. He needs a run of 10 games to really settle into his surroundings.”

Sessegnon has barely played since joining last summer in a £25million deal, last featuring in the Premier League on 22 January.

In all competitions, the England under-21 international has made 11 appearances, scoring once.

In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider transfer is “a car crash waiting to happen”.
