Stan Collymore delivers Tottenham title verdict

By Harvey Byrne

Outspoken football pundit Stan Collymore believes it would take a huge breakdown from Chelsea if Tottenham are to win the league.

The two London rivals are separated by just seven points at the top of the Premier League table following the weekend’s results which saw Spurs regain three points over the Blues.

There is also still nine matches left to play of the Premier League campaign with lots of points still to be won and lost.

Many would like like to see the title race go down to the final hour once more, but Collymore believes it would take a massive meltdown from Antonio Conte’s men if Tottenham do go on to win the title.

“That gap over City will be even greater if they beat them at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night,” wrote Collymore in his column for the Mirror.

“And even if that game only ends all square (which I think it will), I’m convinced the title race will be over.

“Chelsea’s run-in looks so much more straightforward than that of Spurs, and if you ask any player, manager or coach they will tell you points on the board is always preferable to games in hand.

“That’s not to say Tottenham can’t go and win every game and that Chelsea won’t drop more points. But it would be a breakdown and loss of form of gargantuan, Devon Loch-proportions for Chelsea to blow it from here.”

Tottenham had a severe loss of form themselves in the last campaign with just two wins coming from their last seven matches, seeing them drop from second to third and behind fierce rivals Arsenal.

Of those matches included a high tempered clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which resulted in a 2-2 draw and nine bookings for Tottenham’s 10 outfield players.

The Spurs men would certainly be keen to end the Blues’ title hopes this time around and it would also mark their first every league victory since 1961.
