Charlie Nicholas has predicted a Liverpool victory and backed Daniel Sturridge to score first when the Reds play Maribor Wednesday night.
On Sky Sports’ website, the pundit predicted a comfortable 3-0 victory with Sturridge grabbing the important first goal.
“A win looks a certainty and after the weekend I’d give every player who has been on the fringes, the likes of Ben Woodburn, Emre Can and Daniel Sturridge the chance to come in, with six or seven changes,” Nicholas said.
Despite being at the club since 2013, the 28-year-old striker has never scored or started a game for the Reds in this prestigious competition.
So far this season, Sturridge has made three appearance in the contest from the bench, with Roberto Firmino being preferred to start.
Over the course of his three Champions League appearances this season, he has played a total of 49 minutes and registered one assist.
The England international missed featuring for Liverpool in the Champions League during the 2014/15 season because of thigh muscle injury as well as hamstring issues.
By the time the striker had recovered, Liverpool had exited the competition and were competing in the Europa League instead.
Sturridge has won the Champions League before with previous club Chelsea in the 2012/13 season, though he only made two appearances.
In Liverpool’s last game against Huddersfield, the injury-prone striker was able to get on the scoresheet.
In doing so, it ended a two month goal drought for the 28-year-old.
In other Liverpool news, Klopp is reportedly interested in securing the services of a Champions League winning goalkeeper.
