Stephen Welsh will be demoted at Celtic after footage emerges - expert

Frank McAvennie has claimed Stephen Welsh won’t be a regular first team player at Celtic this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops striker insisted Ange Postecoglou will choose Carl Starfelt or Mortiz Jenz ahead of Welsh.

Welsh, 22, started Celtic’s season opener against Aberdeen on Sunday (31 July).

The defender scored the opening goal in the Bhoys’ 2-0 victory at Parkhead.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph reported (1 August) that Toulouse have ended their pursuit of the centre-back.

The French side offered to take Welsh on a season-long loan that included a £3.5million option-to-buy.

The Scottish champions rejected the offer.

When asked if he thought Welsh could replace Starfelt this season, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I don’t think so.

The other boy that they’ve signed is a centre-half as well so I don’t know why he wasn’t playing.

I’ve always said Stephen Welsh is one of the players that’s going to be on the fringe. I think he’s going to be a fringe player.

He’s one of those players that the manager can trust when he brings him in. But if Starfelt or Jenz is fit, Stephen will be on the bench.

The boy’s not done any harm but they’ve just spent a lot of money on a defender so they’re not going to leave him out. If he’s fit he’ll play or Starfelt will play.

“Welsh will be told that he’ll get game time but he won’t get as much as he wants.
