Arsenal are concerned that transfer target Sverre Nypan could end up playing for Man City, according to The Times.

According to the outlet's website on 28 January, the 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder could later "move on to City" if he joins their rivals in the current transfer race Girona, another member of the City Football Group.

The Gunners were previously thought to be "leading the race" for Nypan, with talks progressing well with Rosenborg [The Independent].

However, Arsenal now "fear" that if Girona secures his signature, he could ultimately end up at their once title rivals, City.

Arsenal transfer focus questioned amid Sverre Nypan update

Football Insider Verdict

Mikel Arteta’s side are dealing with an injury crisis, with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus both sidelined.

With Jesus out, Kai Havertz is Arsenal’s only available striker, leading fans to call for a new forward. However, the club appears more focused on midfield reinforcements this window.

Excitement grew over links to Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, and now Nypan’s potential arrival suggests the club is prioritising midfield additions.

Nypan has enjoyed a breakout season at Rosenborg, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists in 33 matches. While he’s a promising talent, Arsenal’s lack of attacking depth remains a more immediate concern.

The Gunners have been linked to several strikers, with Alexander Isak a summer priority instead. Meanwhile, Matheus Cunha has also been linked but Wolves insist not for sale unless a big-money offer arrives.

It remains to be seen if Nypan will follow in the footsteps of fellow Norwegian Martin Odegaard. Interestingly, Arsenal and Girona—Nypan’s potential destinations—face off in the Champions League on 29 January.
